Work and Travel Program and Its Impact on English Level

In another installment of our Work and Travel series, we’re addressing a question that many of you are curious about: the impact of the program on your English skills.

When it comes to Work and Travel, one of the most common questions is whether your English will improve. After all, you’re in a country where English is the native language, and you’re working and living there. Some of you may already have a good grasp of English when you go, but regardless of your starting level, the aim is to enhance your language skills. Hence, it’s inevitable to wonder if your foreign language skills will improve.

However, the answer to this question is no; in other words, Work and Travel does not inherently improve your language skills. We can almost hear you asking how it doesn’t help, so let us explain.

Yes, with the Work and Travel program, you get to live in the United States for a while, and you’re constantly exposed to English. You use it daily at work, during shopping, when making new friends, and in various other situations. Consequently, your conversational skills will improve, and your confidence in speaking will grow. Of course, improving your conversational language skills depends largely on you.

If you create more opportunities to speak English, your conversational skills will develop further. However, there won’t be a significant improvement in grammar and English proficiency. This is because the main goal of the Work and Travel program is not language education. If your sole objective is to enhance your language skills, it would be more appropriate to attend a language school abroad.

In summary, the Work and Travel program offers opportunities for language practice and exposure to English in real-life situations, contributing to improved conversational skills and self-confidence. Still, for substantial language advancement, dedicated language education may be a better choice.
